Matt, you are absolutely correct. There is no way changing from 9.00x16 tires to 11.00x16 tires will have the same level of effect as changing from 5.83 gears to 4.89 gears. Plus, with the tire change you have an additional problem of the added unsprung weight and the added flywheel effect of the heavier tires which taxes the brakes.

I have 9.00x16 tires on both of my trucks with the 5.83 gears. I can comfortably cruise at 55 with no real noticeable loss of power unless I have the truck heavily loaded, which I do often, but at those times I really do not want to be driving at top speed anyway.

I had one truck that had 8.25x20 tires on it. The rolling radius of those tires compared to 9.00x16 tires equated to a 10% increase verses the 19.2% experienced when changing from 5.83 to 4.89 gearing. The larger and heavier tires and wheels on that truck were noticeable when it came time to apply the brakes and slow down.
