There are a number of good videos on youtube about hot riveting. Find a couple good ones and study them. Then do some test runs on scrap steel to get the feel of it. Keeping the rivet hot is very important, and it's hard to do with smaller (1/2" and less) rivets. The steel plates suck the heat out quickly. The length of the rivet is also critical to getting a good set. I forget what the formula is, but it's easy to find.
