I haven't used it myself but my local paint supplier has a rattle can paint that mixes the hardener as you spray.(2 stage) I recall it was pricey but when you look at any paint from the big names it pales in comparison to the waste as you point out. You may want to check that out as well.
I had good results with Acrylic Urethane in the shopline with PPG. Convential spray but the cost wasn't as bad and you don't have to clear coat it.
On a side note. For as much as the stuff costs anymore, they should hand out measuring syringes like the do paint sticks and strainers! Nothing like slopping over a gallon can.
