Jerry, a couple of years ago I needed a new engine for my roto tiller. I visited the nearest Northern Tool and saw the engine I wanted mounted on a dual action log splitter.
My boys who had helped me split wood for years were now adults and gone. I was ready for a power splitter--but I needed an engine for the tiller first and foremost.
So I bought the unassembled thing in a box and immediately put the engine on the tiller.
It worked as you said about yours, better than the original.
Next, I decided to go electric and started checking around about what size electric motor could replace the gas burner. Three HP minimum, 240V, 1phase was the recommendation.
'Finally found one on eBay--USA built no less. Next, had to fab a mount for the motor and hydraulic pump then go back to Northern for a coupling to marry the pump shaft to the motor. The wedge busts logs each direction and there is no waiting. I don't think Northern sells this model anymore--maybe one like it for a three-point tractor hitch.
