Yeah, I had coated the journals with engine oil, but even that stuff starts to thin out and let moisture in after a while. Grease would have been better, or the best would have been cosmoline.

On top of that, the last two summers have been hard on my bare steel tools. I've lived here for over 20 years and never had as much a problem as the last two summers. Even my stainless sink and homebrew kegs developed a thin layer of red-brown that had to be scrubbed off. I need to figure out a coating that I can put on my tools, table saw tops, etc. I think some people use a waxy coating. My dad tried out some kind of white spray-on stuff, but that was in a part of the country where rust is not much of an issue.
