One of my classmates all through school had an unforgettable story. Her dad shipped out for the Pacific after getting married in 1941, leaving her mother pregnant. He died 77 years ago today. In fond memory of the child he never saw, her mother named her "Aloha". She raised the daughter to be a beautiful woman and the widow never remarried. I think of that father and many others like him who never came home--every year at this time.
