Mark, if the new trans has fluid in it I would make sure to flip it 360 degrees at least once per year to keep all the internals covered. I've seen rebuilt trans that had been on a shelf for a couple years with rust on the top of all the steel parts inside - needless to say the rust was only found when the trans failed in service, but that's what the cause was seen to be.
