You are correct, some frames do say not to weld or drill in certain places only. But i still find new frames getting welded on by conversion companies - the rear extension on our rescue truck is channel of all things. I am selective with what gets repaired or modified and where it is done.
never had an issue - but I have not got my hands on a later model frame than a mid 90s truck that needed welding. I know some race car frames get cooked after they have ben welded up - that is a different world than the one I play in now.
