The thicker stepped looking balancer is externally balanced crank the not stepped looking looking thinner is internally balanced crank most truck engines were forged cranks internally balanced while alot of cars were externally balanced sounds like you replaced a forged shaft balancer with a cast crank balancer and is incorrect and over the long haul crank could break have seen it happen by someone who did not know the difference .. as for a aftermarket balancer a performance fluid dampner would be my recommendation
