I use 75-140 synthetic gear oil in both the tranny and transfer case. The whine is probably the transfer case when in 4th gear. If your tranny is non-synchro, you'll get a whine in all gears but 4th, nothing you can do to silence spur gears. If you rebuilt the transfer case and followed an M37 manual for adjusting the driven gear bearings, you’ll get a whine from the transfer case. Using the civilian method prevents the whine.
