One difference between the first series and the 2nd and 3rd is the crossmember holes for the skid strips. On the first series, the holes were staggered on opposite sides of the crossmember. On the later beds the holes were all on one lip of the crossmember.
Another key difference is the rearmost valance or crossmember. On the first series bed it is actually a load-bearing crossmember. On the later beds it is a stamped valance.
