In PWs the change from first to second series beds went along with the change from the early dash to the later dash. The 2wd trucks changed to that bed in 1948. The PW waited until the early 1951 model year to get their version of the 1948 style 2wd bed.
The PW second series beds changed to third series along with all of the rest of the truck line.
So the changes in the PW had more to do with the changes in the 2wd line. I assume it’s easier to make just one basic style of bed in four lengths than to make three bed lengths in one style and one in a different style.
