Tool for removing sending unit rings?

How do you remove the ring that holds in the fuel tank sending unit on Dodge trucks? The ones I am working with are pictured above.

I always use a big screwdriver, and a hammer, but since I am getting tired of damaging the rings, I was wondering if anyone out there had a better way.

I was planning on taking a flat piece of metal shaped like this __/--- and cutting a hole in it to fit the tabs.

Is a tool for doing this made already? If so where do I get one?

If there is not a tool for this, then what do you use (besides a hammer).
