One thing to think about (and I understand about the finances) are your long term use plans, cost of operattion, and the speed at which you want to be back on the road.

That said, one of the reasons I went with the Cummins is that I get 17.0mpg when running 73mph for extended trips down the interstate to places where I like to go offroad. I also didn't do everything at once...

You need to install front discs with any go faster setup, and there are a couple other upgrades that are good to have as well.

A Cummins/Ranger combination without brake work or gear changes can be done for $5000, and I have the parts to do it on the shelf.

If you go with a V8, Ray does very nice work. I use his front discs.
