MSC Corp 1-800-645-7270 sells 6 foot ground and polished lengths of type 303 SS with extra sulfur and phosphorus for easy machining.
1/2" rod is part # TF32004293 for $20.93.
3/4" rod is part # TF32004319 for $40.93.
other sizes available.
Stainless is harder to work with but not impossible.
