No sir, no frame welding in my back yard. Lots of sheetmetal and odd stuff. I thought about the z after I wrote that and related it to carpentry and a shiplap joint. Same concept so yes the z is the way to go. If I sat there and stared at it awhile before I attempted anything I suppose I would have come to that conclusion eventually. And then would have asked here first.
