Sounds like you made good progress on the block hole question. I've heard of people having to switch plates on the back of the water pump, but never quite thought it through to completely understand it. Makes sense now. So maybe plugging that hole in the block is not necessary, after all, as long as one uses the correct plate, i.e, with no hole at the location of the block bypass hole. I suppose either way can work. I seem to remember hearing that George Asche uses the plug in the block approach.

Anyway, it's good to learn (or re-learn in your case, and you are probably one of those guys who has forgotten more than many of the rest of us will ever know - which is intended as a compliment to you).
It seems likely that you were getting some seepage of coolant around those unsealed bolt heads, although I think you would see some visual evidence of that. Hopefully you have solved the problem of the coolant smell and overheating.

As for examining your head, well, I haven't had my head examined yet either, but sometimes I wonder if I should, and my wife definitely thinks so. :-)
