It has been over 30 years since I messed with spring pins, so I cannot be of much help. But, here is another idea:
Drive it to the VPW Rally in Fairfield this June. Your project would not be the first major repair to take place under the pavilion late at night. You will be amazed at how much work a group of guys will go to in order to have fun. Treating them all to their favorite ice cream dessert, after the springs are fixed, at the Dairy Bar is good motivation too. ;^)
