The European H4 conversion units that Keith recommended are really good quality and fairly decently priced. The beam pattern is as good or better than most bulbs and the H4s are available anywhere.
As mannyc said you really need to use those with a headlight relay setup though as they pull lots of juice and can strain or damage the factory wiring, though probably not as likely if you still have the factory 6-volt wiring as it's usually heavier.
There are lots of 7" LED bulbs and they are a great replacement option for performance. Lots of light and barely any power draw, plus you would probably never have to replace them, but they're expensive and will never look factory.
