Steering Knuckle Upper Gasket?

I'm about to assemble the front axle steering knuckles in my 49 Power Wagon, and I'm wondering if there is supposed to be a gasket under the upper bearing cap, or somewhere in the stack of shims. I believe there were gaskets only in the lower cap-to-knuckle joint, not the upper, but the NOS rebuild kit I bought many years ago has four identical gaskets, implying that the upper and lower on both the LH and RH sides are supposed to have them.

I don't think there was a gasket anywhere in the upper stackup when I took it apart, but I'm just making sure.

If there is no gasket in the upper stackup, then I assume we just assemble the joint with shims required for correct preload, but no gasket sealant or anything like that? Is there much risk of leaks like this? Since there is just grease there, it seems like there wouldn't be mich chance for a leak, but again, I'm just making sure.

Thanks.
