No there would not be a lynch mob. Many people on this forum have done it. If the truck is beyond restoration and the engine is toast then have at it. If the engine can be salvaged either use it or sell it on the forum as many guys are looking for a t137 engine.
If you do a V8 swap, you really need to consider disk brakes on the front axle at a minimum. The stock brakes really suffer at with the higher speeds that you can see with a V8. The original brakes can really heat up and fade badly. Don’t ask me how I know that.
