The 45 second rule, and captcha are programmed into the forum script to prevent a spam attack. Spammers have been known to write programs that would bombard a forum with 1,000s of messages. The 45 second rule prevents that. We were getting lots of spam messages, which is what prompted the addition of a captcha. If you get caught in the 45 second rule, then go back to post, you'll need a new captcha code.
If we didn't have spammers, life would be a lot easier. I've tested at other captcha methods, like Google's reCAPTCHA, but wasn't happy with the way it worked. Google has something new called "No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA" that I'll probably test.
