That was the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado. If you go around the back side or come over Medano Pass from the east, the trail goes through the sand briefly. Otherwise, there is no driving on the main dunes. I'm not sure if there is still a tour company giving rides, there or not. I have an old postcard somewhere from the 70s or early 80s with Dodge trucks giving tours on the sand.

Here's another photo of the Wagoneer, this time at Imperial Dunes in CA. That is a big dune!
