Once you get a better look at things, you might give a call to Bob Stahl and Veteran Vehicles. He's rebuilt a ton of these over the years, and he might be able to give you some input on what to do next. He's a super-nice guy and I'm sure he wouldn't mind offering some advice. Hopefully it's the kind of thing that, while not desirable, maybe the area of the pinion that is chipped can be blended with a hard stone to remove any sharp corners, and then the differential can be put back into service. I'm somewhat doubtful of this, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
