Is it metal? If not, then it might be a piece of the side gear washer, which is made of non-metallic fiber. If that has given up the ghost, then I don't now how long the differential will last, but I doubt it would do well for too long.

As for the slowness of the drain, the drain hole is quite small, as you know, and it could easily be plugged. You might try sticking a wire or skinny screw driver in the there to loosen it up.

At any rate, it would probably be a good idea to pull the differential and see what's going on in there. It's not terribly difficult to do.
