WC52 Front Axle

I'm working on a friend's truck and don't have my manuals handy to answer these questions. We bought the truck without a front drive shaft, and found the front input shaft turns with no resistance. Today, while working on brakes, we found that the axle shafts are not present in the the front axle housing.

Questions- is there an inner seal for the axle shaft that needs to be emplaced by removing the differential carrier? Or can I replace the axle shafts and the outer seals from the hub side and be done with it? I have not been inside a WC axle before to do this and am not familiar with it.
