Since the manual was written before white bread was invented and coca cola still had a kick, I think they were referring to a quickly evaporating solvent, like acetone or lacquer thinner. I like the Brake cleaner that comes in spray cans at NAPA for cleaning hard to get to places. It evaporates quickly. But the fumes and the solution itself are pretty harsh.
