As Tom said, it's a good sign of starter going/wore if the electrical connections are clean and not corroded. Depending on which starter you have, I'll give some things to check.

Foot starter? Disconnect battery and take the contact off to look for corrosion or pitting contact points. Pretty easy and quick to do. It's just the little slide contact that protrudes on the starter and the battery cable is attached to.

Modern starter. Pull the solenoid and take apart and look at the contact disc. If bad, flip it over and clean up everything you see.

More than likely though their is too much slop in the starter motors shaft/bearing. Your tapping knocks it so it is close enough to do it's job. Others will have more ideas but this is what I have found over the years.
