I had that sound on a 51 Plymouth, especially going up hill. I replaced the manifold gasket and it went away. Funny thing though, when I touched the carburetor getting ready to remove it, it rocked up and I discovered the nuts holding it down were not tight at all. it was just sitting on the manifold. I had only just purchased the vehicle and had not driven it very far. I also had to remove the gas tank and have the leak at the output line sealed and replace the rear leaf springs. I drove it around for a couple years without doing anything else. Sold it and used the funds for the power wagon.
