The pinion gear rides in the lower half of the 3rd member. Just like in the rear axle housing. I do not think you could install one upside down do to the stud spacing, but if you could you certainly would not want to. The pinion gear would be up out of the gear lube.

This puts the fill/level plug aimed towards the driver's side of the vehicle.
