Check the oil level in your differential as they do leak. If you have the axles that gave the bolted on differential cover opposite the differential, remove it and drain the differential and check for any metal chunks and damage along with cleaning out the sludge. If there are metal chunks check the gears. The gears could be just fine as I have found perfect gears in a differential with metal chunks. Obviously someone didn’t clean up after an earlier differential failure.
If you don’t have the removable covers at some point you can pop the differential and clean and check things out.
