Don’t feel bad Jim. It sounds like those guys are just not used to communicating. They probably do not communicate internally within their company and when a customer wants to communicate specific instructions, they are at a complete loss as to what to do. In my experience the supervisors are the worst at this.

Case in point:

In the machine shop where I am the Director of Quality Control, I made a mistake yesterday. I created scale computer models complete with all the features necessary to fill the customer’s order. I created detail drawings from these models. For one of the features I specified a thread size of 5/8-18 UNF - 2A. I specified the tolerance range for the thread major diameter as well as the tolerance range for the thread pitch diameter. All of this information appeared on drawing. What I failed remember was that the program automatically defaults to UNC for the cosmetic threads on the model. I forgot to manually change this value and that caused an incorrect thread callout to appear on the drawing – 5/8-11 UNC – 2B.

So the nightshift supervisor noticed that the thread pitch and major diameter measurements agreed with each other but the threads per inch callout did not agree with either of those. Instead of communicating to me the discrepancy, he took it upon himself to make the decision and go with the one callout that did not agree with the others – the erroneous thread callout. So now we have parts that have a thread on them differing from what the customer asked for.

I initiated the problem by making the mistake, but I have no one above me to check my drawings and it is nearly impossible for someone to check drawings that they themselves have created. I try to add enough information to create checks and balances, but it all fails when there is no communication. I deal with it every day.

Junior
