You can try to shift it from low to high and back (very softly) while driving it on a loose surface at idle in 1st gear. If it is shifting correctly, you will grind the gears. Hence the need for shifting it softly. If no grinding then you either have linkages that are way out of adjustment, or as Vaughn said, broken fork or set screw came loose.

If it truly is a broken fork or a set screw that backed out, I would not drive it at all until I had disassembled and fixed it. If either of those two pieces gets caught between gears, it could wreck the whole transfer case.
