The first step to chrome plating is copper plating.
You can take your items to a chrome plating company and they can do it for you, ask them to do a thicker plating for you.
Copper is soft as well is nickel the next process, then the chrome that is a hard durable coating.
You can also buy plating kits, and only get the first step done in your garage.
