Jim there is a lot involved. If you can get your hands on an old motors manual from the 50s you will have all of your questions answered. The flashing will do nothing for the regulator. Fleshing will make sure there is residual magnetism in the generator pole shoes. When the gen gets up to enough rpm then it will overcome battery voltage. Voltage is controlled by the coil with the fine wire winding. When the voltage comes up the reverse current cutout relay should close. That is the one with two sizes of wire windings.
When I was in the Army in the 60s this is what I did on all of the generator regulator vehicles. Alternators were just coming out then.
