Jim: The "noise suppressor" is a capacitor. Yes, it can fail, just like the one for your points. If they fail, they fail as a short circuit or open circuit. I've never heard of an ignition filter failing and causing a no start/run though.

And... they were more important when we listened to AM radio (like when oyu had an 8 track...) but FM radio is relatively immune to ignition noise.
