I get all my metal zinc shot blasted. It leaves a zinc residue and the self-etching primer I use keeps the metal very nice under whatever I paint on top. I have stuff that has been painted and left outside for over 2 years now, and still looks nice.
I have tried the weld-through zinc primer a bit but not with any long-term results yet. But it looks promising.
