The only time I fished for those ugly things, I was at Lake Minchumina AK. I was fishing from the shore and caught one basically every cast. I was not a happy camper as I really wanted to get some arctic char. On top of that I had to leave the day before their annual rock skipping contest. I did get a rock skipping tee shirt.
Lake Michumina is at the geographic center of Alaska which is in the middle of nowhere just north of Mt Denali. All there was there,at the time, was an air strip, a few buildings and a fair number of crashed planes off either end of the air strip.
