I wouldn't pull the windings out. I ouldnt want to damage the wrapping. no need to paint the inside anyway. the parts are so huge they rarely go bad. I think those generators weigh 70 lbs.!
if it was charging fine and just bad bearing then maybe don't worry about testing?
Electric motor cleaner or brake clean is what I use to clean things up.
