Wow that happened to me on a 1957 Chevrolet 283 with a press on harmonic balancer. I was just testing a rebuilt engine before driving the car and when I shut it down, I heard that clunk and found the balancer laying in the engine compartment. No damage as well but I could imaging what could have happened. I drilled and tapped the crankshaft for a bolt.
