Used to be pretty common for cheapskates to run 50/50 kerosene and gasoline in Model Ts, and I can't imagine our 1930s-vintage flatheads are much pickier. Kero used to be way cheaper than gas. Pump gas was 60-something octane back then. I've NEVER had the slightest issue with very old, stale, bad-smelling gas in a 230. All you can do is try it and see what happens. Not sure about running straight ethanol, but I wouldn't be surprised if it works. Propane conversion is surely the cleanest and most practical, though. Seems like somebody told me they used to run these flatheads on casinghead gas in the oil fields in the old days too. That's basically all the vaporous stuff that comes out of an oil well, without any refinement.
