If your hands tingle after using solvents, the solvents are most likely chlorinated hydrocarbons. Methylene chloride is the most common one and will go right through most rubber gloves, and since it is a real good anaesthetic it will cause your skin to go numb. Breathing these vapors in high concentrations can cause you to pass out, which can be fatal if you fall into a 'pool' of the heavier than air solvent vapors - they can suffocate you. Chloroform is a very close relative to methylene chloride, and we all know what it's used for.
