Frame location/ VIN #

As I read Dana's post looking for his frame stamped vin #, I see many say theirs are stamped on the drivers side. My 64'WM300 and all othe WM300s I've checked had them stamped on the passengers side,outside frame rail over the axle.
Does anyone know when the change was made from drivers side to passengers side?
If swapping a bad cab for a good one, would the DMV frown on swapping the doorpost vin plates to keep the cab and frame # the same?
