I have a 1960 WM300 with the 230 ci engine and would like to use another engine for the rebuild which is going on. I would prefer a staight six in either a diesel or gas, but are their any engines which would be a direct bolt-up to the NP420 transmission? I really would like to keep the original transmission. I thought a while back that a hercules brand 6cyl diesel was available for the M37 and the wm300 models and the Hercules still utilized all the original drivetrain components. If such a swap is not possible what areas does the 230 need help in when rebuilding the flathead, seems to me the rod a main bearing areas are the weak points on this particular engine.
