Your in-cab shift levers allow you to engage the drive from the transfercase to the front axle as well as giving you a high or low gear choice but,even when you've disengaged the drive to the front axle and only the rear axle is being driven and pushes the vehicle forward,and as the front wheels roll , they are still attached to the axle which is still attached to the ring gear and all this takes energy to turn thus robbing HP. The lock-in/out hubs disengage the wheels from the axle so the axle and gears are not being turned which robs HP and unnecessarily wears the gears,bearings and bushings in the front end. When they are disengaged, only the wheels turn and roll freely. The frontend components are thus saved from wear when not needed.
