I had the same experience, and wrote about it in the PWA magazine several years ago.
Some here on the Forum want to argue whether or not the problem is with the tire or the wheel not being round.
I can't comment on which one is the correct issue, but
to me the bottom line is that the truing corrects the "roundness" of the rotating mass so that the end result is a smoother ride.
Also, by doing the truing and the on the truck spin balancing it identified that one of my wheels was bent.
