they are wrapped sometimes in leather but usually sheet metal. They are lubed springs. back in the day service stations had a spring lubing set up and they would grease the springs with special grease. the Dodge WC54 had wrapped lubed springs to improve ride for the wounded. (See the TM9808)
Tons of cars ran them. my 53 Pontiac had them. Rolls Royce ran a leather boot. I have replaced those was pretty easy just lace it on with a leather cord. it does work quite well
