After looking at the manual and reading all this stuff, I don't think the shims do anything for the position of the steering knuckle. I think the position is set by the position of the lower bearing. Its located via all the machining of the castings. The shims just adjust how tight the two are squeezed and to take up variance from the machining top to bottom.

The outer trunnion bearing races were stuck in the castings on this machine. This was confusing me about the shims. I guess once everything is cleaned up they will slide easier. Then the adjustments will make more sense.

Thanks millions guys! This stuff you're telling me just does not come through from reading the manuals.

Off to buy a portable bearing press..
