Don't bash anything.

Remove the old bearings with a bearing splitter. Set the trunnion bearings. You set the bearings on the studs with a portable bearing press that can be got at any good auto parts store. They will be set down against a shoulder on the stud. The bearing race slides in the upper housing. It is not a press fit. The cap holds the race in position. The shims allow you to adjust adjust the preload by adjusting the caps position.

The inner seal and bushing in the axle housing are not difficult to replace. The hardest part that people have is getting the old ones out. The bushings in my trucks we're loose and fell out. People have made tools to pull them or you can rent a inner bearing puller. To put the new ones in you can use a bearing driver of the correct size. Again any good auto parts or tool store will have them. I use a socket of the correct diameter to set them. I have a 3/4" socket set that I have for the truck. You only need to tap in the bushings and seals.
