One of the many projects on the Carryall included removing the thermostat casting. When I re-installed it I was worried that possibly the thermostat wasn't lined up properly. Maybe a corner poking out? Lined it up twice trying to make sure. In the end I did the best I knew how, bolted it down and figured, if there was trouble, I could always go back in and fix it.

So I kept my eye on it while doing other work on the truck. (Driveshaft stuff for weeks). One day I notice the casting is starting to leak a tiny bit around the base. So before I push this machine I better fix that.

Tonight I decided to bite the bullet, pull it apart and see what I messed up. I pull off the casting and the thermostat looks fine. Imagine that. I'd actually got it in correctly. But the new gasket had soaked up the water and fell to bits!

Looked like wet newspaper.

What's the deal? Is there some new gasket tech. I don't know about? Get it wrong and the gasket turns to mush?

Do you need to run the engine immediately after the instal to bake it?
